John L. Terry, 86, of Salem, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at Brookside Care Center in Kenosha.
Born Sept. 24, 1926, in the Terry homestead bedroom, he was the 5th of 6 children born to Herbert Harry H. and Frances (nee Ketterhagen) Terry.
He attended St. Francis Xavier School in Brighton, which was a one room schoolhouse at that time. On Aug. 20, 1949, he was united in marriage to Dolores R. Richter at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in New Munster. They recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.
John and Dolores owned and ran the Terry Century Farm in Kenosha County, which was first owned by his father and uncle, where they raised chickens, hogs and beef cattle. They also grew oats, corn and hay to feed their many animals. John helped support the farm by working at American Motors, Virgil Schultz Trucking and drove school bus for Thomas Bus Service. He loved interacting with the kids and always wore his cow hat so the children knew which bus to board.
John was a lifetime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He served as a Trustee on the Parish Board, was an active member of the Holy Name Society, was chairman of Fall Bazaar and Mens Smokers along with being an usher and lector. He served as a supervisor on the town board and was a committee member with the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service. In his leisure time he enjoyed dancing and playing sheepshead.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores R.; children, Barbara Fleming, Rita (Perry) Mueller, Patricia (Gary) Glas, Mark (Therese) Terry, Theresa (Robert) Hozeska, Maria (Greg) Gillmore; grandchildren, Sean Fleming, Michael and Jeremy Mueller, Amy (Pete) Foerster, Holly (Ryan) Graf, Adam and Derek Glas, Brian (Jessica) Terry, Taylor (Chad) Larson, Erica and Parker Hozeska, Ariana (Joel) Culbertson, Austin Gillmore; great grandchildren, Lauren and Graham Foerster, Quintin and Bennett Graf, Riley and Chloe Mueller, Phillip Terry and Dawson Larson and one sister Virginia Gin Jazdzewski.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Jerome Jerry Terry, Bernard Bernie Terry, twin sisters, Catherine Jaworski and Evelyn Suminski.
The family would like to thank Brookside Care Center nurses and staff for their care, love and support.
Services for John will be held Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church.
