Helen L. Evans, 89, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 1994, in Memorial Medical Center.

She was born July 27, 1905, in Elgin, the daughter of John G. and Cary (Bopp) Elbert. On May 24, 1947, she married Hubert M. Evans in Elgin. He preceded her in death Aug. 1, 1992.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Woodstock and its Mariola Club and was a member and past president of the Woodstock Women's Club. She was a 1927 graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, and in her early years had been a buyer and store manager for O'Brien Bros., Marshall Field and Co. and Joseph Spiess Co., all of Chicago.

Surviving are a son, Elbert "Al" (Jackie) Evans, and a grandson, Matthew G. Evans, all of Grand Prairie, Texas; three nieces, Mary Ellen (Joe) Burg of Woodstock, Pat Hall of San Jose, Calif.; and Kathy (Jeff) Parker of Gilroy, Calif.; and a nephew, Robert (Susie) Evans of Champaign.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. with a liturgical wake service at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, in the Schneider, Leucht, Merwin & Cooney Funeral Home in Woodstock. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 23, in St. Mary Catholic Church, the Rev. Al F. Harte officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Woodstock.

Research notes for Helen

1939 and 1941 Elgin city directories show Helen L Elbert living at 215 N. Porter St. -- the same address her parents lived for years. However, she's NOT on their 1940 census record. I have no idea why and I can't find her anywhere else.
