1923 - 2008

 

Peter C. Szymanski, 85, of Pleasant Prairie, passed away Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, after a lengthy illness.

Born on April 30, 1923, he was the son of the late Peter and Helen (Szarabajka) Szymanski.

On Jan. 1, 1943, Peter served his country as a member of the 44-I Pilot Class. Later in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, where he was a radio operator and a waist gunner in a B-24 Liberator until May 17, 1946. Peter attended Michigan Tech from September 1946 until May 1947 before serving his second hitch from June 2, 1947, until June 5, 1950, with the Strategic Air Command in Nebraska as a flight engineer in a B-29 Superfortress.

On May 14, 1955, he married the love of his life Marilyn Robers. Sadly, his beloved Marilyn preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 2005.

Professionally, Peter was a Plant Engineer with AMC before his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the PLAV James Smelcer Post #34, the Ke-Nash-A Club and the World War II Museum. Peter was a devoted and faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Peter's life was filled with many hobbies and small pleasures. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and playing softball, and spent his time doing car restoration. For almost 30 years Peter and Marilyn would spend their summers up north at Pine Lake in Hiles, Wis. Peter was known for his sense of humor and wit that would entertain his family and friends.

Left to cherish the many memories of the love, joy and laughter that Peter shared are his four children, Peter W. (Kathryn) Szymanski of Stratford, Conn., Patricia J. (Douglas) Moore of Kenosha, Nancy A. (Wallace "Chip") Shilkus of Kenosha, and Robert J. Szymanski of Pleasant Prairie; two brothers, William A. Szymanski of Kenosha, and Frank J. Szymanski of Nekoosa, Wis.; and his five adoring grandchildren, Matthew, Danielle, Nicholas, Gabrielle and Dylan.

Funeral services for Peter will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at 9:15 a.m. from the Piasecki-Althaus Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 7307 40th Ave. Entombment will follow in All Saints Mausoleum. A visitation for Peter will be hosted on Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home with PLAV services at 6 p.m.

The family would like to thank Dr. I. Rashid and Dr. P. Shah for their care and compassion.
