Verna Mary Ellen Helsing, 72, a 26-year resident of San Bernardino, died Tuesday in a hospital there. She was born in Nebraska.

She was an elementary school teacher in the San Bernardino City School District 20 years before retirement. and was a member of the California Retired Teacher's Association and the Order of the Eastern Star in South Dakota. She belonged to St Paul's United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Vaughn; a brother, Kenneth Stracke of Iowa; and a sister, Ruth Blakkolb of San Bernardino.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, with entombment following in Montecito Memorial Park, Grove Colonial Mortuary is in charge of arrangements and friends may call there from 3 to 9 p.m. today.
