Last Rites Held At Mount Carmel For Sr. M. Laurina

 

Funeral services for Sister Mary Laurina, BVM., who died in Mount Carmel infirmary Sunday morning, January 24, were held in Mount Carmel chapel Tuesday. The Rev. Justin A. Driscoll celebrated the Requiem High Mass.

Sister Mary Laurina, daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes Zuraff Burk, was born in Jesup, Iowa. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity, BVM., May 24, 1892, from Waterloo, Iowa.

For nearly 50 years she was an instructor in Chicago parochial schools — Holy Family, St. Charles, Our Lady of the Angels, and St. Vincent. Other missions to which she was assigned were St. Patrick's, Lincoln, Illinois, and St. Mary's, Riverside, Iowa. About five years ago she came to the infirmary.

Surviving members of Sister's immediate family are a brother, Joseph Burk, San Diego, California, two sisters, Mrs. Anna Salz and Mrs. Agnes Thompson, both of Waterloo. A niece, Sister Mary Rembert, BVM., local superior of Sacred Heart convent, Manly, Iowa, and a grandniece, Sister Mary Patrick Louis, BVM., New York.

SISTER MARY LAURINA
Funeral services for Sister Mary Laurina, 81, a nun for 62 years and native of this city, were conducted Tuesday morning at Mt Carmel chapel, Dubuque, with burial there.
A daughter of Joseph and Agnes Burchinsky, she was born June 10, 1872, entering the congregation of the Sisters of Charity May 24, 1892. She was a teacher in Chicago schools 56 years and for two years was a instructor at Riverside.
She had been a patient for the past four years at the Mother House Infirmary at Dubuque where she died of complications incident to advanced age.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Anna Salz, 52 Franklin St., and Mrs. Agnes Thompson, 321 East Second St., and a brother, Joseph Burchinsky of San Diego, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
