INDEPENDENCE

Charles E. Leary, 76, of Independence, died about 6 p.m. Tuesday in People's hospital here of injuries suffered in a pedestrian traffic accident on a downtown street at 2:50 p.m.

According to a statement given to police by Eugene Lewis Spece, 35, of Independence, Spece was driving his ton and a half truck east on First St. toward the Second Ave. stoplight.

He said another vehicle had stopped for the light in an outside lane. Spece, traveling in the center lane had stopped one or two vehicle lengths west of the intersection.

He told police that when the light changed Leary walked or ran in front of the vehicle in the outside lane and into the side of his truck.

Leary died of a basal skull fracture.

Police investigation of the accident has been completed and no charges were filed.

Leary was a longtime resident of the Jesup area and moved to Independence recently.

He is survived by his widow, three sons, Lloyd, Freeport, Ill.; Robert, Jesup, and Raymond, Walker; two daughters, Mrs. Harry Baldwin, Jesup, and Mrs. Lawren Forney, Seville, O.

Funeral services will be at 2 p. m. Friday at the Parker funeral home in Jesup, with burial in Cedar Crest cemetery there.

YOUNG PEOPLE WED.

Last evening at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Henrietta Trumbauer, occurred the marriage of Miss Buelah Trumbauer to Mr. Charles E. Leary of Jesup. The bride has been teaching successfully in the Dunkerton schools for several terms and the groom is a young farmer living near Jesup. Both have many friends in Waterloo who extend heartiest congratulations on the happy event.

Research notes for Charles

In regards to the 1900 census, I know that "John" is not Charles Edward, but I really do believe this is him. Based on Charles marriage record (parents) and his mother's obit (listing children), I cannot see how this is NOT Charles. No idea why he's listed as John.
