Judith Anne Mears

Surrounded by family, our beloved Mom, Nanny, Great Nanny passed away peacefully on April 17, 2022 in Toronto at the age of 86. Judy was born in Tangier, Nova Scotia on December 24, 1935 to Malcolm Hawes and Gertrude Murphy. She was one of 11 children and graduated from Mount St. Vincent with honours. She moved to Ottawa where she met and married her beloved husband, the late Joseph Francis “Harry” Lawlis on April 28, 1956. She will be forever cherished and remembered by her children Cathy (Kerry Johnston), Ken (Elsie Ruhland), Mary (Richard Markle), Allen (Jennifer Ward) and Jennifer (Abraham Villarreal Peña). Judy will be missed by her grandchildren Liam (Amy), Matthew, Erin, Emily, Jake (Sara), Kate (Sam), Brenden (Erica), Arianna, Sean, Becky, Erick and her first great grandchild, Adelaide Rose. (Nanny’s treasures on Earth.) Judy was a devoted sister survived by Adrian (Anne Minogue), and her sisters-in-law Olga Hawes (the late James), Therese Brouse (the late Thomas), and predeceased by Beatrice (Knud Jensen), Agnes, Allen (Rita Blais), John, Helen (Al Bélair), Doris (Thomas Flynn), Francis, Ronald (Barbara Colby), and a loving sister-in-law to the late Mary Lawlis (the late William Shields). For 17 years Judy was remarried to and shared her life with the late Martin Vincent Mears and enjoyed being part of the Mears family. She will be truly missed by her many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends who brought her much love and happiness.

Judy had a zest for life. She loved to sing, dance and laugh, and to challenge anyone to a game of Scrabble or Cribbage. Most importantly, she loved to spend time with her family and friends. She had an endless faith in God and was thankful for all He blessed her with in her life. We wish to express our sincere gratitude and thanks to Nicole Cote-Jeffrey and all the caring staff at Presentation Manor for their compassion and incredible care of our Mom.

Friends may pay respects at the Kelly Funeral Home, 2313 Carling Avenue (west of Woodroffe), Thursday, April 28 from 3 to 7 pm. Members of the CWL will assemble for prayers Thursday at 6pm.
