Mrs. Day's Services In Prescott
PRESCOTT

 

Services for Mrs. Gertrude Schemmer Day, 74, who died Monday in Yavapai Community Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Cremation will follow.

Mrs. Day, a native of Bonesteel, S.D., had been a resident of Prescott for 51 years, having come here from South Dakota to teach school at Groom Creek School near Prescott. She started teaching in 1917. She later taught in Chino Valley and then taught in the Prescott School system from 1945 to her retirement in 1958.

In 1958 she was elected outstanding teacher in northern Arizona.

Survivors include son, Sam S. Day of Durango, Colo.; a sister, Mrs. Mary Olguin of San Bernardino, Calif.; three brothers, Henry Schemmer of San Bernardino; Jake Schemmer of Winner, S.D., and Fred Schemmer of Prescott; and three grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church here, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, and a member of the American Association of University Women. She had been active in early work of establishing the state teachers retirement program.

Friends may call at Ruffner Funeral Home 4 to 7 p.m. today. The family suggests memorials to the Prescott School Library, P.O. Box 61, Prescott.
