Earl H. Richter, 70, a retired Soil Conservation Service employee, died Sunday, Oct. 27, 1996, at his home of cancer.

Mr. Richter was born Oct. 25, 1926, in Madison. He attended St. Thomas Catholic Schools in Madison, graduating in 1944. He spent two years on the family farm, and served in the Army for one year during the occupation of Japan.

He married Joyce Fiegen June 13, 1950, in Dell Rapids. He graduated from South Dakota State University in 1951. He taught high school vocational agriculture in Doland for three years. He then began a 32 year career with the Soil Conservation Service, with assignments in Redfield, Ipswich, Lake Andes, and Canton in 1965. He retired in 1986.

He was a member of the St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Canton, and a 50-year member of the Knight's of Columbus. He was a member of the Canton Senior Citizen's Center, and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.

In addition to his wife, survivors include four daughters: Diane Houser of Crown Point, Ind.; Mrs. Randy (Janice) Bennett of Jacksonville, Fla.; Mrs. Ron (Eileen) Wiebelhaus of Austin, Minn.; and Mrs. Bob (Mary) Davis of Peoria, Ill.; two sons: Dan of Spencer, Iowa; and Joe of South Sioux City, Neb.; 15 grandchildren; four brothers: Francis of Madison; Don of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; Harold of Lincoln, Neb.; and Bill of Madison; and two sisters: Mary Ellen Murphy of Trinidad, Colo.; and Bernice Metcalf of Yuma, Ariz.

Funeral Mass begins at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Canton, with burial in the Forest Hill Cemetery near Canton.

Visitation begins today from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Canton, and again at St. Dominic's Catholic Church from 6 to 9 p.m. A scripture service begins at 7 p.m.
