James Edward Hoye died Monday, July 27, 2009, in Tallahassee. He was 94.
Jim was born in Wauwatosa, Wis., on Jan. 6, 1915, the son of Marie and Frank Hoye. He worked with his father at Frank Hoye Pattern and Millwork Co. prior to moving to Ocala in 1947. He was employed as a teacher and administrator by the Marion County School Board from 1948 until his retirement in 1982. He took courses at Florida State University from 1949 to 1952 and always had fond memories of those times at Florida State University. During the last three years of his life, he loved attending FSU football, basketball and baseball games.
Jim was an active member of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Ocala and a member of the Holy Name Society and Emmaus. While in Tallahassee, he was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Jim was an active volunteer after his retirement, volunteering with Hospice of Marion County, United Way of Marion County (where he earned the Volunteer of the Year Award), Marion County Retired Teachers' Association and Brother's Keeper. Mr. Hoye was also a longtime member of the Public Safety Commission, as appointed by the Ocala City Council.
Jim will always be remembered as a loving husband and father. He was an easy-going, positive man who enjoyed life and loved his family and friends. He loved summer vacations with this family when younger and was able to continue to travel following his retirement and enjoyed many wonderful trips with family and friends. Jim taught us all how to be gracious and have a sense of humor even during very difficult times.
Jim Hoye was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Paul and Emmett; and his wife of 44 years, Romaine Hoye.
He is survived by three daughters, Sharon Maloney of Anaheim Hills, Calif., Patti Stradomski (Terry) of Gainesville, Fla., and Jerri Patterson of Tallahassee; five grandchildren, Michael Maloney of Plant City, Fla., Michelle Maloney of Anaheim Hills, Mandy Deas (Jeremy) of Denver, Traci Patterson, also of Denver; and Brett Stradomski of Gainesville; and two great-grandchildren, Jena Maloney of Anaheim Hills and Carter Deas of Denver.
The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Heritage Oaks, where Jim lived his last three years. In addition, with the added care of Big Bend Hospice and Maxim caregivers, he was able to continue to participate and enjoy his last months.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308, and/or to the United Way of Marion County, P.O. Box 1086, Ocala, FL 34478.
A memorial and celebration of life service will be held at Heritage Oaks, 4501 Shannon Lakes West, Tallahassee, on Saturday, August 4, at 2:30 p.m. EDT. A private burial at Good Shepherd Memorial Gardens will take place in Ocala at a later date.
