Hermina was born Feb. 19, 1931 in Winfred, SD to Frank and Henrietta VerMulm. She was raised in the Rock Valley area, where she graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1948 and then attended Northwestern Jr. College of Orange City, receiving an elementary teaching degree in 1949. She taught at a country school in the Rock Valley area for a short time after graduation and then raised her family.
On Nov. 10, 1951, Hermina and Frank Kaskie married. They divorced in 1983. Hermina's greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Hermina and Frank farmed in South Dakota and then in the Rock Valley area before moving to the Chatsworth area in 1960, where they farmed until 1963. Following a devastating tornado, the family moved to the Hawarden area, where Hermina became deeply rooted in the community. She was a member of the American Lutheran Church and had been involved over the years in church activities, such as Sunday School, VBS, Funeral Committee, Mission Quilters, Food Pantry and Women's Circle. She was a Scout Leader for some of her children in years past.
She worked at Swanson's Hardware for a time, for the City of Hawarden for many years, was employed at Casey's for 21 years and then contributed her time to the Foster Grandparent program at West Sioux School from 2003 to present. She truly enjoyed giving her time to the kids in her class and cared deeply for them.
She took great pride in working in her garden and flower beds and also enjoyed making quilts for her family. She was always thinking about the needs of others and was a caring and giving person.
