Harold B. Richter, age 90, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Aurora Memorial Hospital of Burlington. Harold was born in New Munster on January 11, 1922 to the late Bernard and Alvina (nee Toelle) Richter. Harold was a lifetime resident of New Munster. On September 12, 1953 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in New Munster, Harold was united in marriage to Mary M. Kretschmer. He proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force and in 1945 went overseas to Ie Shima, an island off of Japan. After serving 4 years, Harold was Honorably Discharged in 1946. This past summer he flew on the Honor Flight to Washington DC. Harold was an auto mechanic for Uhen's Garage for 45 years. After retiring at Uhen's he worked for the Town of Wheatland for many years. He had also spent his entire life as a custodian for the Wheatland Town Hall. Harold was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, where he volunteered much of his time, and for 18 years was the Fire Chief for the Wheatland Fire Department. Along with singing in the church choir, Harold was a member of the Westosha Men's Choir and a barbershop quartet called the Wheatland Firemen Four. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making special items for his grandchildren, as well as playing Sheepshead and Euchre. Survivors include his wife, Mary, their children; Joan (Marty) Lois of Burlington, Jim (Gail) Richter of Waukesha, Bob (Debbie) Richter of Bassett and Jane (Peter) Peterson of Burlington, grandchildren; Nick (Colleen) Lois, Chris Lois, Amanda (Peter) Green, Adam Richter, Katie Richter, Greg Richter, Colleen Richter, Eric (Mandi) Peterson, Alex (Amanda) Peterson and Daniel Peterson, and by 3 great-grandchildren; Tim, Joe and Harvey. Harold is further survived by a sister, Delores (John) Terry and by in-laws; Sister Martha Kretschmer, Rose Kretschmer, Edmund Kretschmer and Armella Rossmiller. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ruth Hofner. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 7:00 PM at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church with Rev. Tom Biersack officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at the CHURCH on Thursday, from 3:30 PM until 6:30 PM. Private burial will take place at St. Alphonsus Cemetery. Memorials have been suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.
