Ralph W. Helsing, 83, of Onawa, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1991, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Onawa, with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. Sunday, with family present from 7-8 p.m., at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
Mr. Helsing was born Aug. 7, 1908, at Burke, S.D., the son of Charles August and Elizabeth Margaret (Schemmer) Helsing. He graduated from the Bonesteel (S.D.) High School, and from the Grand Island (Neb.) Business College in 1933. He married Phyllis R. Bagley Aug. 17, 1934, at Newcastle, Neb. He had been with the Army Corps of Engineers since 1933. They lived in various towns in Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska, moving because of his work. They lived at Omaha from 1943 until moving to Onawa in 1955. He had served with the National Guard and was an Army Reserve officer, prior to serving with the Army Air Corps during World War II. He returned to the Reserves in 1946 and retired as a Lt. Colonel Sept. 1, 1968.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and of the Methodist Men.
Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, James and Lyse of Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Darlene Barnett, of Onawa; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Scott of Warrenton, Va., Albert of Rigby, Idaho, and Vaughn of Highlands, Calif.; a sister, Jane Scholes, of Ventura, Calif.
He was preceded in death by a son, Harold R. "Skip" Helsing, and an infant son.
