Stanley Schemmer Day, a former Durango High School teacher, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, in San Marcos, Calif. He was 80.
Mr. Day was born on Dec. 24, 1922, in Prescott, Ariz. He was a resident of Durango from 1957 until 1969. He taught high school in Durango before moving to Southern California. He was a life member of Elks Lodge 507 in Durango and a 32nd Degree Mason.
Mr. Day was the grandson of David F. Day, founder of the Durango Democrat, one of Durango's first newspapers. He loved to return to Durango every chance he had.
In his retirement Mr. Day enjoyed woodworking, traveling and visiting relatives and friends.
Mr. Day was preceded in death by his wife, Evie, in 1986.
He is survived by two sons, Chuck Day of Durango, and Fritz Day of Payson, Ariz.; a daughter, Kathy (Day) Ihlbrock of San Diego; and four grandchildren, Calin, Dusty, Eric and Sarah.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Grace Episcopal Church in San Marcos, Calif.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
