Peter A. Schemmer Sr., 71, of Hawarden died suddenly Friday, September 30, 2005, at Hawarden Community Hospital.
Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Porter Funeral Home of Hawarden is in charge of arrangements.
Peter A. Schemmer was born May 28, 1934, in Sheridan, Wyoming, the son of Vincent and Eva Florence (Jensen) Schemmer. At the age of 3 months his father died, and he moved with his mother to Alvord, Iowa, where he grew up and completed the ninth grade. His mother, Eva, married Martin Van Noort, and they moved to Hawarden, where Peter graduated from Hawarden High School in 1952.
He married Anna DeHaas on June 17, 1954, at Hawarden. The couple had three children -- Patricia Ann, Peter Alan Jr., and Pamela Alaine. Peter was employed at Wanless and the French Implement beginning in 1950. He went to work for Hawarden Lumber in 1966 and as a custodian at the West Sioux Elementary School beginning in 1981. Peter retired at the age of 61.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, was past master and past member of Dale Masonic Lodge 456, twice past patron of the Eastern Star Loyal Chapter, and a member of many radio organizations in the area including the Amateur Radio Relay League. Peter enjoyed camping and fishing, woodworking, photography and amateur radio.
Survivors include his wife, Anna; a son, Peter Alan Schemmer Jr. of Hawarden; two daughters, Patricia Ann Schemmer and special friend, Joy of Valentine, Nebraska, and Pamela Alaine Schemmer and Husband Michael Sweet of Davis, California; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
