Henry Alois Stumpe, beloved father of Carl, Louis and John Stumpe, Marilyn Trousdale and Jane Scott, died Monday, May 21, 2007, in Florence, Ala. He was the son of Henry George and Mary Hoernig Stumpe and a lifelong resident of St. Florian, Ala. He was the grandson of John Matthew and Mary Gertrude Stumpe, one of the first settlers in St. Florian, which was established in 1873.
Henry was born Feb. 17, 1919, and educated at St. Michael's grammar school and Central High School. During World War II, he served in the European theater in Batter D of the 547th Anti-Aircraft Battalion of the 95th Infantry Division under General George Patton. He worked as a chemical operations supervisor at the Tennessee Valley Authority in Muscle Shoals, Ala., and was a member of the International Union of Operating-Engineers.
Henry was a faithful member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Florian. He lived near the church, and, while he was able, attended church services almost every morning. He loved to hunt and fish, see the country by car and work on his small farm.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Mary Beatrice "Bea" Neidert Stumpe, of Loretto, Tenn.; his sister, Pauline Stumpe Schorn; his brothers, Frank, George and August Stumpe and Ambrose and Harold Peters; and two grandchildren. He is survived by his children, Carl Stumpe and his wife, Mary, Louis Stumpe, John Stumpe and his wife, Rebecca, Marilyn Trousdale and her husband, Logan, and Jane Scott. He has 11 grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Mann and the managers and staff at Columbia Cottage assisted living facility, Summit Rehab Center and Mid South Home Care Services for the care provided to our dad.
