Ladder Gives way in Sand;

Louis J. Salz, 126 Sherman avenue died at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday in St. Francis hospital from a brain concussion and hemorrhage as the result of head injuries suffered while at work Tuesday as a plumber on a new home in the 500 block of Cutler street. He was 43 years old.
The injuries were received in an eight-foot fall into the basement when the ladder which he was descending gave way in the soft sand on which it was resting.
His hands full of tools, he was unable to help himself as he fell head-first into the sand below, grazing his head on one of the upright supporting posts as he fell.
Collapses Later.
Salz put the ladder in place and walked back up. Because of his dazed condition, he was taken home by a fellow workman and went to bed. Later in the day he lapsed into semi consciousness and was taken to the hospital.
Salz was secretary-treasurer of the Waterloo Plumbers & Steam Fitters association, local 384, prefect of the Third Order of St. Francis. and a member the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's church.
A resident of Waterloo all his life, he was born here Jan. 18, 1898 to Joseph J. and Anna Salz. He attended our Lady of Victory academy.
With Firm Since 1916
In 1916 he began working for his brother, John P. Salz, of the firm of Bruner & Salz, plumbing and heating contractors, where he was employed until his death. On May 21, 1924, he married Miss Margaret Geib in Waterloo. They had, three children, Winifred, 16; James, 15; and Dolores, 13.
Surviving besides the widow and children are his mother, living with her daughter, Mrs. Patrick Doherty. 158 Argyle street; another sister, Sister Rembert, at St. Joseph's convent in Sioux City, and three brothers, John P. Salz. 1332 Logan avenue; A. L. Salz, Dubuque, Ia., and William B. Salz. Decorah, Ia. His father and one sister preceded him in death.
The body will be taken from the O'Keefe & Towne funeral home to the residence at 4 p. m. Thursday.
Solemn Mass.
Members of the Third Order of St. Francis will meet to recite the rosary at 7 p.m. Friday at the residence.
Solemn requiem high mass will be conducted Saturday at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic church by Rev. Clarence Piontkowski pastor of St. Mary's, as celebrant; Rev. Andrew Hanfland, assistant pastor of St. Mary's, will be deacon, and Rev. Luke Striegel, first cousin or the deceased, of Loras college, Dubuque, Ia., sub-deacon. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
