Fairbank, Aug. 17.
The funeral of William Wagner was held from the Methodist church Thursday morning, conducted by Rev. C. A. Peddicord. Mr. Wagner was born in Germany in 1837 and came to Black Hawk county and settled on a farm near Fairbank in 1854, being one of the oldest settlers in this locality. He was an industrious, honest man, and acquired a competency. His death occurred at the home of an old friend and neighbor, John Hayer.

Research notes for William
Which William Wagner? That's the question of this man. There were three Wm Wagner's in the area. Add to that the fact that this Wm had his fair share of family drama...
SEPARATION FROM AMELIA
Wm ran notices in the paper for most of the month of Aug 1892. "The public is hereby notified that my wife, Amelia Wagner, has left my home and I will pay no debts of her contracting. - William Wagner, Waterloo, Aug. 8, 1892."
This seems pretty straight forward except they are all together as a family in the 1895 census. But in the 1900 census Amelia is listed as a widow. Ok, Wm died BTW 1895 and 1900...wait...no...they're all together again in 1905. But again, we're back to being a "widow" in 1910. Apparently he was dead to her.
In any event, it explains why they are not buried together. It explains the lack of family details in his obit. Even Amelia's obit only mentions his name...he is not listed as a survivor.
Despite everything, I was not sure that THIS Wm, who died in Aug of 1914 was the correct Wm until I found his the Notice of Appointment of Administratrix. Posted 3 days after his obit is the Notice saying that EMMA SNADER (his daughter) is to be the Administratrix. This is what ultimately convinced me that this is the correct Wm.
As for the DOB? Well, the death record say Aug 6, 1830; the obit says 1837 (which I doubt); the 1900 census says Aug 1833. Since the odds are that he submitted this information himself, I'm going with it. Plus...
Assuming it IS Aug of some year...
1870 census (age 37) would mean 1832
1880 census (age 46) would mean 1833
1885 census (age 52) would mean 1832
1900 census (age 66) would mean 1833
and finally, my Unsourced Doc said 1833 and, TBH, it was rarely wrong.
