Death removed Sunday night a popular figure in the Ida Grove community life in the person of C. W. Satterlee, proprietor of the Park Hotel on Main street, whose demise came without warning.
Mr. Satterlee had been seen on the streets Saturday and even on Sunday and if he had symptoms of illness, he gave no indications to those in his family circle. When he mounted the steps to his home Saturday night, he mentioned the difficulty he had in making the climb, but on Sunday morning he insisted on going down and getting his newspaper. During the day he complained of a tight feeling in his chest and didn't eat his dinner and only a few bites for supper. After supper, he turned on the radio and appeared restless. About nine o'clock, he went to the couch and lay down. Almost immediately, his wife heard him gasp, but he spoke no word and apparently within a few seconds, life was gone from him. The doctor pronounced the ailment heart disease and believed that the possible distress that Mr. Satterlee felt Sunday was a premonition of the end.
Charles William Satterlee was born July, 1871, at Boone, Iowa, and lived to be 58 years, 7 months and 10 days old. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Satterlee. He lived at Boone until 7 years old, when his mother died. The lad then came to Ida Grove and made his home with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Satterlee. He followed the business of painting with his uncle until he was nineteen years old. At that time, he left Ida Grove and went to Waterloo, where he engaged in the barber trade.
In 1891 he was married to Miss Augusta Wagner at Fairbank, Ia. To this union, two children were born, Mrs. Neva Wellendorf and Lyle Satterlee both of Waterloo.
The family made its home at Independence, Iowa, for twenty-eight years, where Mr. Satterlee owned and operated a barber shop. For a time he was associated with his son Lyle in a garage business and later he was a traveling salesman for a number of years.
In July 1922 he bought the Dr. Conn hospital building in Ida Grove and established the Park Hotel, which he was operating at the time of his death.
His parents preceded him many years in death. The surviving relatives are his wife, his two children and two brothers, George of Denver and Robert of Sioux Falls. There are three half brothers, Byron, Fred and William Satterlee. There are four grandchildren, Wallace Satterlee, Kenneth, Robert and Mary Satterlee, all of Waterloo.
Mr. Satterlee was a man of kindly disposition, a great friend of children and jovial among a large circle of acquaintences. He had a cheery word for everybody and his familiar figure will be missed from the streets of Ida Grove. His hotel was made home like and comfortable for a large circle of patrons and his business never lacked for loyal customers.
Mr. Satterlee was a member of the Woodman order at Independence.
The remains lay in state at Moore's undertaking parlors Tuesday and were taken Wednesday to Waterloo, where the funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at the O'Keefe & Towne mortuary parlors. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.
