I've done a fair amount of research on Elizabeth. I think I know her story, but it's all based on fuzzy facts. Without more, I cannot say for sure. It goes like this...
I hit upon Elizabeth's whereabouts by searching for her nephew, Evan Schmidt's 1940 census record. Evan's obit says he's been in Reading, PA for 28 years (since 1939). It took no time at all to find him and (nice bonus) his sister, Beata. And - another surprise - they are living with their aunt/uncle, Jacob and Elizabeth Bender.
I have not seen the BENDER surname yet, so let's start with Elizabeth. Ah, Edith Elizabeth Tribon...must be going by Elizabeth. The closest hit I think I could find would be her brother Franklin's obit. I've looked for this before, but let me look again. And yes! Franklin's obit (1931) mentions a sister, Mrs. J. Bender in Reading, PA. There is no one else. Elizabeth Bender, aunt of Beata and Evan, is the daughter of Herman Tribon, born Edith Elizabeth Tribon.
Wait a second...I have other family obits, and Bender didn't sound familiar... the next obit chronologically is Elizabeth's mother, Emilie M Fratzke. Her obit mentions a daughter, Mrs. John Frome from Collegeville, Pa. Okay, 2nd husband...no problem.
From here I can work out more specifics. I found a
SSDI for E. Frome, Collegeville, Pa., born 8 Nov 1906 (MATCH) and died Jul 1975. This led me to Find a Grave where I find an entry for
E. Elizabeth Tribon Frome 1906-1975. Okay, this is her.
And now everything gets fuzzy...
I feel I have correctly identified Jacob Bender. He remarried in 1944 after the (presumed) divorce and had more children.
Find a Grave's entry for Elizabeth has a son linked...
Peter W Bender 1939-2013. Wait, what? Why is he not in the 1940 census record? Further research on Peter shows me that, yes, this is most likely the child of Elizabeth and Jacob. But I cannot shake the feeling that his DOB is NOT 1939...I think it's 1940. Why? I don't know. But I have a theory. Peter's obit says he was a U.S. Navy Veteran and worked in Air Force for 23 years retiring in 1979. If that's true, he joined the Air Force in 1956. In 1956 he was 17 years old...unless he was born in 1940...in that case he would be TOO YOUNG to join. So, he says he was born in 1939. Voila! He's 17 and now old enough to join. But alas, this is just a THEORY.
But here's the thing...his DOB is Jun 26, 1939 (I know FaG has it listed as Apr 26 for some reason.) But let's assume other records, SSDI, obit, etc. are correct and it is JUN 26...The local newspaper in Reading, PA has pretty good coverage of NEW ARRIVALS. In Jun 1939, they're putting them on page 1. From Jun 26 - July 3, 1939, there's no mention of a new boy from Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bender. I did a spot check on at least one birth every day I checked and all but one matched up to a real person born the day before the announcement. The one exception, was born two days before. Sadly, I don't have access to those papers in JUN 1940. But again, I get the feeling I'd see it there. In any case, without proof, Peter's DOB is listed here as 1939...for now.
As for John H. Frome, husband #2, well, of course it's complicated. I searched for other Frome's in the cemetery where Elizabeth is buried and found
John H Frome 1910-1984. I also found his wife, Kathryn M. I think this is a wife AFTER Elizabeth died...or possibly after a divorce...but I have no idea. Further research is fuzzy, but I THINK this is him...but I have no details.
So, Elizabeth married J. Bender sometime before 1931 (brother's obit).
Divorced BTW 1940 and 1944 (Jacob re-marries).
Married J.H.Frome BEF 1959 (mother's obit).
Died with the name FROME in 1975.
