Evelyn Warborg Cullinan, 82, a former teacher, died Saturday, Oct. 28, 1995, at Fellowship Village in Inwood, Iowa. Funeral service was held Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Rock Valley. Father Dale George officiated. Burial was at Saint Mary's Catholic Cemetery at Rock Valley. Visitation was Monday at the Porter Funeral Home at Rock Valley.
Evelyn Schemmer was born April 26, 1913, in Rock Valley, daughter of Albert and Katherine (Richter) Schemmer. Evelyn attended Saint Mary's grade school at Rock Vidley. Sacred heart High School at Omaha, NE and graduated in 1931 at Mount Saint Mary's School at Cherokee, IA. After attending Iowa State Teacher's College at Cedar Falls, IA, she taught in Sioux and Lyon County rural schools. She married Martin Anthony Warburg on May 28, 1938, in Rock Valley. They lived near Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Estelline, SD. Her husband died in August, 1942, and Evelyn and her three sons then moved back to Rock Valley. She ran a cafe and then taught school from 1944 until 1975, in various places including Rock Valley and Larchwood, Iowa. She married Martin Cullinan on June 29,1955 in Rock Valley. He died Oct. 12, 1983.
Evelyn was the 1958 Iowa Rural School Teacher of the Year; 1979 Merit Mother of the Year by the Iowa Mothers Association; 1980 Mother of the Year of the Sioux City Council of Catholic Womenm Evelyn was active in lowa State Education Association, Catholic Daughters of America, Saint Mary's Women's Guild, Quilter's Circle, Council of Catholic Women, and Retired Teacher's Association. Evelyn was known for her sewing and quilting skills and during the 1970s was involved in missionary trips to Mississippi to teach women to sew. During the 1960's, Evelyn and Martin were parents to two foster children and were a lost home for six Hope Haven children.
She is survived by three sons and their wives: Thomas and Carol Warburg of Port Orchard, Wash.; William and Rochelle Warburg of Johnson Creek, Wis.; and Martin and Karla Warburg of Valley City, ND; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter of Logan, Iowa: and four sisters: Mrs. Al (Viola) Wise of Saint Paul, MN; Mrs. Floyd (Kay) Olson of Brainerd, MN; Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Otterstrom of Tulsa, OK; and Mrs. Tom (Agnes) McIntosh of Newport Beach, CA.
She was preceded in dealh by her two husbands; two grandsons, Jason and Michael Warburg; three infant brothers; brother, Clarence "Solly" Schemmer; two sisters, Elvira Keegan and Lunetta Goldsmith.
The family suggests memorials to Rock Valley's Hope Haven School or Public Library.
