Sister Marcella Reilly (Sister Bernan), 78, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, died at Mayo Clinic Hospital — Saint Marys Campus on Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015.

Marcella Joan Reilly was born Aug. 6, 1937, at Huron, S.D., to Bernard P. and Mary (O'Meara) Reilly. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1957 from St. Martin Parish, Huron, S.D. Sister Marcella made her first vows in 1960 and Perpetual Vows in 1963. In 1971, she received a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and History from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, and in 1998 was certified in the Befriender Ministry.

Sister Marcella was an intermediate teacher at several schools across southern Minnesota: St. Pius X, Rochester; Holy Trinity Rollingstone; St. Francis, Rochester; St. Raphael, Springfield; and St. Augustine, Austin. She also taught at St. Margaret Mary School, Golden Valley, and Cathedral School, Rapid City, S.D. Following her years of teaching, she served as a Parish Worker at Sacred Heart Parish in St. Paul, and St. Stephen Parish, Minneapolis. She was a Gift Shop volunteer at Saint Marys Hospital from 1982-1983. Sister Marcella served in Pastoral ministry at St. John's Parish, Rochester, from 1983 to 1995. Following a year of sabbatical, Sister Marcella served as the Congregational Retreat Coordinator for 11 years. She retired in 2008.

Sister Marcella is survived by her sister, Sister Mary Lonan Reilly; a sister-in-law, Betty (Earl) Reilly; several nieces and nephews; as well as her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared life for 58 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, James, Earl and Matthew; and one sister, Rose Norquist.

A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights, Rochester, preceded by a Prayer Service at 9 a.m.

Memorials are suggested to the Sisters of St. Francis, Office of Development, Assisi Heights, 1001 14th St. NW, Rochester, MN 55901.
