Elmer Sommerfelt, 84, of Paw Paw, passed away Friday morning, March 22, 2013, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born Feb. 2, 1929, in Independence, Iowa, the son of the late George and Nettie (Trebon) Sommerfelt.
He was employed at Paw Paw Plating for 38 years, retiring in 1993. After a few years of retirement, he worked for the Paw Paw Laundry until his final retirement. Elmer was a member of Valley View Bible Church, Oshtemo Township. He enjoyed fishing, and was a great dad who enjoyed playing ball with his children, whom he greatly loved.
On Sept. 16, 1948 in Hazelton, Iowa, Elmer was united in marriage to Evelyn R. Peck, who preceded him in death Sept. 2, 2007.
He was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, DeJanee Sommerfelt; one brother: and three sisters.
Surviving are two sons, Dale (Cathy) Sommerfelt of Paw Paw, and Randy (Mimi) Sommerfelt of Waco, Texas; three granddaughters, Jennifer Sommerfelt of Portage, MI, Sarah (Scott) Overholt of Portage, MI and Angela (Jeff) Gasper of Gobles; grandson, Randy Lee Sommerfelt of Waco, TX, great-grandchildren, Troy and Katelyn Gasper, Madelyn and Landon Overholt; sister, Ida Mae Hansen of Independence, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
The family received friends Monday at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw. A memorial service was held Tuesday, March 26, at Valley View Bible Church, Oshtemo Township with the Rev. B.J. Luce officiating. A luncheon followed.
