Esther Mildred Poppe, age 75 passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010 at Allen Hospital Comfort Care, Waterloo from complications with cancer.

There will be a memorial service for Esther on Nov. 11, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 121 East Washington Street Shell Rock, for all who wish to attend.

Esther was born Feb. 13, 1935 in Independence to George and Nettie (Trebon) Sommerfelt. As a young woman Esther married Donald Shapley they later divorced, they had two children, Donald Dean and Elizabeth Marie.

Esther worked as a waitress and planter at a tree nursery. She met Orin Poppe who gave Esther and her children a place to live, and after time they married on June 5, 1971. They had one child, Dawn DeAnne Poppe. The family lived in Nashua and years later moved to Tripoli.

Esther enjoyed sewing, making beautiful patchwork quilts, reading, baking, and being with her family.

Esther is survived by her husband Orin C. Poppe of Tripoli, a sister Ida Hansen of Independence and one brother, Elmer Sommerfelt of Paw Paw Mich. Two daughters, Marie Shapley of Plainfield, her fiancé Jeff of Cresco, Dawn (Poppe) Spencer and Jonathan Spencer of Plainfield. A daughter-in-law Juanita Shapley of Clarksville. Two granddaughters, two grandsons, two great-grandsons and two great granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents George and Nettie Sommerfelt, one brother, four sisters, and her beloved son Don.
