Monica Marie Stanger, 68 of Watkins, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2011 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. Interment was in the Paynesville Cemetery. Fr. John Brunner, Fr. Michael Peterson and Fr. Richard Gross officiated. Music was by Mary Streit. Solo selections by Fr. Michael Peterson. Casket bearers were Jeff Dahl, Ben Kotz, Eric Nelson, Paul Kotz, Nick Terhaar and Bill Kotz. Arrangements were with the Ertl Funeral Home, Watkins.
Monica Marie (Kotz) Stanger was born on May 8, 1943 in Belgrade, MN. She was the fourth of fifteen children of Joseph and Gertrude (Sweeny) Kotz. Monica graduated from the Belgrade High School and Willmar Community College as an LPN. She married Michael Stanger on August 31, 1963 at the St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade. They owned and operated Stanger's Restaurant and Recreation in Watkins from 1978 to 1988. After that, Monica worked at the Central MN Surgeons and the Eye Surgeons And Physicians in St. Cloud. She retired on March 1, 2011. Monica was a charter member of the Watkins Lioness Club, she taught religious education in Paynesville and Watkins, she served on the St. Anthony School Board, the Watkins Ambulance Service, and she served as an election judge. Her hobbies included reading, scrap booking, playing cards and going to the casino. She especially enjoyed the flowers that Mike grew and she treasured her "sister trips".
Monica is survived by her husband, Mike Stanger of Watkins; sons, Peter (Jackie) Stanger of Maple Lake, Patrick Stanger of Watkins; grandchildren, Shelby, Anthony, Andrew and Elizabeth Stanger; bonus grandchildren, Andrew, Taylor and Hope Agnew; brothers and sisters, Ronald, Vernon, Eugene, Wayne, Mark, Brian, Virginia, Maxine, Rosella, Janet, Margaret, Kathy and Lori. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Julie.
