Everett Metcalf, 84, of Monroe, Wash. died peacefully Nov. 30. He was born at home in Greenwood, Wis., on Aug. 16, 1924, to James and Clara Metcalf.
In his early years, Everett attended grades one through eight in a one-room schoolhouse. His older sister taught school during one of those years. He graduated from Greenwood High School, and attained a degree in agriculture education from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. His master's of science degree was earned from the University of Wisconsin with an emphasis on agriculture journalism.
Everett worked in the Extension Service at South Dakota State University from 1954 to 1970. His family moved to Pullman in 1970 and Everett began working at the Cooperative Extension office at Washington State University. He was a publications editor there until his retirement in 1988. He valued education and continued his lifelong love of learning by being involved in the native plant society, volunteering as a master gardener and working in a literacy program.
Everett married Bernice Rees on Aug. 7, 1963. He was a loving father to his six children. He is preceded in death by his son, Steven, his parents, his brother and his sister. He is survived by his wife, Bernice; his sons, Mark of Pullman, Curt of Chile, South America and Greg of Atlanta, Ga.; his daughters, Peg of Bellingham, Wash. and Lynelle of Redmond, Wash.; and his nine grandchildren. Everett will be remembered for his beautiful yard and multitude of house plants, his hearty laugh and his gentle, caring nature.
There will be a private remembrance service in the spring at WSU. Memorials in his name can be made to Special Olympics or the charity of your choice.
