Research notes for Eric

NAME - I think Eric was born in Sweden as Erick H. Johnson. I think John is a nickname. Or it's possible it's an Americanization of the name Han. In any case, there's enough records showing him as Eric(k) H. that I'd mention it. But, as with most of the name changes I come across, I go by what's on the headstone. I think he wanted to be known as Eric "John" Johnson. Who am I to argue?

BIRTH - Yes, Sweden. The only record that suggests a MN birth is his obit.

My search for Eric's records were...interesting. Based on his obit, I started searching for Eric Johnson with parents, George and Mathilda in Minn. I was also searching for BORN IN MINN. (This was a mistake.) I added a sibling, Emma to no avail.

So, I poked around for Emma. Emma turned out to be Emma (Johnson) Nelson (10 Oct 1897 - 17 Jul 1974). Her obit revealed she was born in Sweden and grew up in Sandstone, MN. Sandstone, MN should narrow things down. I searched for Emma and found her instantly. 1910 census and 1905 census both with Eric (as Erick H.). However, Eric is shown being born in Sweden. (No wonder I couldn't find him.)

Now, I have really no doubt the 1905 and 1910 records are legit. The 1920 record...well, I think this is him and he's mislabeled as "Son". The other item that leads me to think the 1920 record is legit is the immigration part. Eric is listed as immigrating in 1903 (matches 1905 and 1910 census). Also listed as naturalized in 1913. This matches his father (yes, alive in 1920 and beyond). George Johnson, shoemaker in Sandstone, MN is in a 1920 census...immigrating in 1903 and naturalized in 1913. Now, the population of Sandstone in 1920 was ~1,750 people. If there is more than one shoemaker in town, they're not BOTH named George Johnson. For that matter, there's most likely not TWO Eric Johnsons both born ~1901. Plus, his "mother" Mary Anderson...well, she's got two other children on that census, Edward, and Albertina. One born in MN and another in ND. Meanwhile, she was born in Sweden and immigrated in 1885. So, she came here in 1885; moved to ND; had Albertina; moved to MN; had Edward; then moved BACK to Sweden to have Eric?? No. Plus, she's around in 1910 with Edward (son) and Albertina (step-daughter) in 1910...with no Eric.

In any event, my search for a 1930 census came up empty.
