Louis John O'Brien was born November 14, 1912, on a farm south of Masonville, Iowa, the son of John and Elizabeth Duffy O'Brien. He attended country schools near his home and served his country during WWII.
Louis was united in marriage to Lorraine Barbian on July 15, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop. They made their home in Winthrop where six children were born: Daniel, Stephen, Patsy, James, Donald, and Sue. Louis worked as a machine operator at John Deere Tractor Works in Waterloo for 31 years, retiring in 1977. He was a good family man and friend. He enjoyed shooting pool and playing cards with his buddies for many yers. He loved his trips to the casinos, gardening, tinkering with cars, and helping out family, friends, and neighbors in any way he could.
He was a long time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Winthrop and UAW Local 838 of John Deere.
A Memorial Fund has been established and may be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice.
Louis entered into his eternal rest on Sunday, January 6, 2008, at the Buchanan County Health Care LTC in Independence at the age of 95 following a short illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine on Jan. 3, 2000; three grandchildren: Haley O'Brien, Zachary Bass, and Ricky O'Brien; and five sisters: Evelyn Seaton, Vanetta Casey, Kathryn Hocken, Alice Porter and Anna, who died in infancy.
Survivors include his six children: Daniel (Diane) O'Brien of Ocala, FL; Stephen (Kathy) O'Brien of Bowman, GA; Patsy (Butch) Bass of Cookville, TN; Jim (Molly) O'Brien of Hartwell, GA; Donald (Michelle) O'Brien of Belle Plaine, IA; and Sue (Gary) Roscovius of Independence; eleven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday January 10, 2008 in St. Patrick's Catholic Church at Winthrop with Father Aloysius Vorwald officiating. Casketbearers will be grandsons: Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery at Winthrop. Friends may call from 4 PM until 7 PM Wednesday Jan. 9, 2008 and 7 AM Until 10:30 AM Thursday at the Fawcett Funeral Home in Winthrop. A scripture service will be held at 7 PM Wednesday.
