Gladys Elbert passed away at the hospital at Sioux Falls on Tuesday, October 11. Memorial services were held on Saturday, October 16, at the Pioneer United Methodist Church at Rock Valley. Rev. David Waterman officiated. Interment was in the Valley View Cemetery with the Porter Home in charge of arrangements.
Gladys Elbert was born on March 7, 1900, to Frederick and Flora Heisig, one of the pioneer families of the Rock Valley area. They came to Rock Valley by train in March 1885. Mr. and Mrs. Heisig were an influence in the Community and always stood for any good project, and for good schools and education. Mr. Heisig was school director in District No. I Sioux Township and served as secretary of schools in Sioux township for many years. He was also township assessor, road boss, justice of the peace and served on the election board for many years.
Gladys Elbert followed in her father's footsteps and was always a pioneer for a good cause. She worked for many years in raising funds for the Cancer Society on the election board, an was active in church and civic activities. She was one of the organizers of the Sioux Township Farm Bureau and worked in that organization for many years. She organized and compiled a book entitled "Our Heritage," which was dedicated to her parents. As the book states. it was compiled "so our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews will have some knowledge of our wonderful heritage."
She was married to Louis Elbert on May 5, 1920, in Rock Rapids. They lived on farms in Sioux and Lyon Counties until they retired to Rock Valley in 1969.
She is survived by two daughters, Jean, Mrs. August Kelmp, Overland Park, Kansas, and Dorothy, Mrs. Edward Contos, Anaheim, California; one son, Fred, Hills, Minnesota; and two sisters, Ann, Mrs. William Brooke, Tuscon, Arizona, and Lorraine, Mrs. William Whiteis, Iowa City, Iowa. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren and one great grandson.
