Location : Brillion Village Cemetery, Brillion, WI
After waging a gallant but losing battle against encroaching infirmities of old age, one of Brillion's few surviving pioneer settlers, Fred Richter Sr., departed this life last Friday at the home in this city.
The decedent was born in Wheatland, Kenosha County, April 27, 1850. Following the tide of pioneer movement northward into the wilderness the young man came to "Spring Creek" over fifty years ago and soon won a place as foreman with the Beach and Bishop lumbering firm here. Later he went into farming south of this city. In 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Carrie Fischer, who now survives him.
Surviving the deceased are two sons, Fred G. Richter and Fergie H. Richter both of this city and one daughter, Mrs. William Krause lives at Marshfield. One brother, Alphonse Richter resides at Kenosha. There are fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
In sturdiness, integrity, courage and kindliness, the deceased was a true type of the early pioneers whose legacy, if the younger generation would but grasp it, is an invaluable asset to the nation. The trial and struggles of the pioneering days brought out the sterling qualities in men which remained with them during their later years, living examples of the virtue of industry, fair dealing, and civic uprightness. Mr. Richter was such a citizen.
The funeral was held on Tuesday in charge of Brillion Lodge No. 270, I.O.O.F. of which he had just completed a continuous membership of fifty years.
