Dr. Bernard C. Schemmer, 57, of Bonita, an optometrist for 27 years and former Sweetwater High School and Southwestern College trustee, died of cancer Wednesday in Mercy Hospital.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Berge-Roberts Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Milo Wood of First Baptist Church officiating.
JOSEPH RINDONE JR. will give the eulogy. Dr. Charles Smith, Dr. Alvin May, Jim Sibbet, Dr. D. C. Reopelle, George William Webster and Ned Rogers will be pall bearers.
Honorary pall bearers will be George James, Ralph Hughes, John Dyster, Teak Killion, Ed Cheneweth and John Menard. Burial will be in Glen Abbey Memorial Park.
Schemmer was born in Rock Valley, Iowa, lived here 27 years and was a State resident for 40 years.
He was a graduate of the Southern California School of Optometry and attended the University of California at Los Angeles and Occidental College.
Schemmer moved to the south Bay in 1950, opening offices at 737 National Ave., later moving to 334 E. 8th St., National City, where his office is today.
HE WAS a 27 year member of National City Chamber of Commerce, was president in 1970 and was active in chamber membership drives.
He was a 26-year member of National City Kiwanis Club, served as its president in 1960 and had a 25-year perfect attendance record.
He was an honorary member of the National City Boys' Club board, served as president in 1970 of the National City Servicemen's Center, and was a member of Kenneth L. Blanchard Post 255, American Legion.
He served on the Sweetwater High School District board for 14 years and on the Southwestern College board for nine years, serving as president when the college was dedicated.
SCHEMMER was active in the United Crusades, Red Cross drives, in the Paradise Valley Hospital fund raising drive and in school bond elections.
He was a member of the Band Boosters for Bonita Vista and Hilltop High schools, was a 27-year member and a past president of the San Diego County Optometric Society.
Schemmer is survived by his wife, Marian M.; two sons. Steven C. and Jim, and two daughters, Susan C. of San Diego and Jean A. of La Mesa.
