Lavern Matthias, 75, of Frederika, died Sunday, Sept. 30. at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Velma; three sons, Harvey of Smithland, Leslie and Richard, both of Readlyn; four daughters, Linda Netski of Las Vegas, Marlene Kuhlman of Dunkerton, Lois Peters of Tripoli and Ellen Althouse of Castalia; four stepsons, Logen, David and Kent Harms, all of Tripoli, and Michael Harms of Frederika; a stepdaughter, Ann Pavelec of Tripoli; and 29 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren; he was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Marion, on Dec. 29, 1987; services were 10:30 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Readlyn, with burial in St. John United Church of Christ Cemetery-Siegel, rural Waverly; Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Readlyn, was in charge of arrangements; Mr. Matthias farmed in the Readlyn area, drove a school bus and had an egg route for Land O' Lakes.
