Mrs. Anna Luke, 87, daughter of one of the early settlers of the Wheatland township, and herself one of the oldest Wheatland residents, died at Burlington Memorial hospital at 6:30 Sunday evening August 21, following a sudden illness.
Active and in good health despite a broken hip suffered a year ago, Mrs. Luke was stricken Sunday morning at her Wheatland home and was removed to the hospital by ambulance during the afternoon.
Anna Richter was born December 28, 1861 to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Richter. Her early life was spent on the Richter farm just north of the Burlington-Wheatland town line road. Her schooling was had at St. Alphonsus church, New Munster.
On January 30, 1883, she was united in marriage to William Luke, the ceremony taking place at St. Mary's church here with the pastor, Reverend Wisbauer officiating.
Three years later, in 1886 Mr. and Mrs. Luke moved to the Luke home in the village of Wheatland where they have since resided. Mr. Luke, for many years chairman of the Wheatland town board, passed away at his home March 29, 1938.
"Grandma" Luke, as she was known to all the children around the Wheatland community, leaves five children, 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren to mourn her passing. Surviving children are Mrs. W. H. Linneman, Milwaukee, Mrs. J. P. Verhalen, Milwaukee, Frank and Catherine, both of Wheatland, and Werner of Chicago. One son died in infancy.
One brother, Theodore Richter, Burlington, also survives.
The remains will be at the McCarthy Funeral home until burial services which will be at St. Alphonsus church, New Munster, 10 o'clock Thursday morning, with the Rev. J. J. Michaels officiating. Interment will be at St. Alphonsus cemetery. Members of the Christian Mothers society, St. Alphonsus parish will say the Rosary Wednesday night at the McCarthy Funeral home. Mrs. Luke was a member of that parish for nearly 60 years.
