Walter Hugo Mumm was born June 6, 1916, in Fairfield, WA to Dora (Wrage) and Claus Henry Mumm. He had one older brother, Hans. Walt went to be with his Lord on May 25, 2014, twelve days before his 98th birthday. He grew up in a German farming community around Fairfield. After he graduated from high school, where he played violin and tennis, he wanted to attend college and seminary. However, it was during the depression and he was needed to help the family on the farm. In 1948, Walt met a Home Economics teacher at church in Colville, WA. He and Wilma Wagner married in 1949 in Chewelah, WA. They were devoted to each other for almost 61 years. Walt lovingly cared for Wilma in their home as her health declined until her death in 2010. While farming in Chewelah, the couple's three children were born. They had a 4th child in 1958, Mary Rueanne, who was stillborn. After a life threatening illness in Chewelah, the family moved to Dayton, WA and later to Walla Walla, WA, Wenatchee, WA and finally to Chehalis. Walt farmed again outside of Walla Walla until his health required him to give that up. The rest of his career was spent working at Caterpillar dealerships as a Parts Rep. He retired from NC Machinery in Centralia in 1982. In retirement, Walt and Wilma traveled overseas and throughout the US. They delivered Meals on Wheels "to the elderly" well into their 80s. Walt also volunteered at the old hospital in Chehalis and later at the new one in Centralia for around 2000+ hours over the span of many years. Many have enjoyed the fruits of Walt's woodworking hobby and he was always available to do repairs or hang pictures in his daughter's homes. To the very end, he read widely on many subjects and read his Bible daily. Walt was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Chehalis and the Blue Creek Grange. Family was everything to our Papa. Walt was predeceased by his wife, Wilma, his parents and brother, and a great grandson, Zedekiah Rico. Our Papa was first and foremost a man of God, dedicated to his family, a steadfast, honorable and humble man. As one of his grandsons observed recently, he raised his children well and they in turn raised their children well, this will be his legacy. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends Services will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Chehalis, WA on Sunday, June 1, 2014. Viewing at the church will be at 12:30 PM with the Celebration of Walt's life at 1:00 PM. A reception will follow at the church.
