Verena S. Ketterhagen, 88, passed away Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Mount Carmel Medical & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington. She was born August 1, 1921 in Burlington, to the late John and Elizabeth (nee: Siehoff) Freund. Verena was a lifetime resident of Burlington and a graduate of St. Mary's High School. On May 20, 1944 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Burlington, Verena was united in marriage to Roman Ketterhagen. Verena had worked at Pieters, Bartons and Ley's Department Store, and as a receptionist for Quality Carriers. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild, and had worked the hot lunch program at the school. Verena loved sewing and quilting and was an excellent seamstress. She also loved playing the piano and organ, dancing, traveling and playing cards. Most of all Verena loved spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her loving husband, Roman Ketterhagen; their children, Dale (Nancy) Ketterhagen, Elaine (Hank) Bennett, Sue (John) Dewey and Gary Ketterhagen, all of Burlington; grandchildren, Ann (Tim) Roegner, Troy (Angie) Ketterhagen, Grant (Kelly Jo) Ketterhagen, Chris (Rachel) Bennett, Matt Bennett, Michelle (Chris) Henke, Andrea (Jeremy) Augle, Chantry Ketterhagen, Valarie Ketterhagen and John Jr.(Tracy) Dewey; and by 12 great-grandchildren. Verena is further survived by her sister, Rosella Eckert; brother-in-law, Cyril Ketterhagen; and by sisters-in-law, Alice Daniels and Bernice Ketterhagen. She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Benjamin Ketterhagen; and by a brother-in-law, Donald Eckert. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 13, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Robert Gosma officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at Schuette Daniels Funeral Home on Thursday, November 12, 2009 from 4 until 7 p.m., with a 6 p.m. Prayer Vigil. Memorials to the Alzheimer's Association or to the family for a charity of their choice have been suggested. The family of Verena would like to express a special thank you to Mt. Carmel Medical Center and the Odyssey Hospice for all their care and compassion.
