James E. McConnell, 71, formerly of Granite Falls, died Tuesday at St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. The Rev. James Moran will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Canby.
Friends may call at Hamre-Wing-Bain Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Thursday. St. Andrew's parish prayers will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home in Granite Falls. Local arrangements were made by Williams Funeral Home.
James McConnell was born April 11, 1915, in Canby, to Arthur and Betsy (Helgemo) McConnell. He married Margaret Crowley Jan. 6, 1943, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Canby. He was a rural schoolteacher in the Canby area, was in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European theater during World War II and was a State Farm Insurance agent in Canby from 1945 until 1961. From 1961 until his retirement in January 1983 he was Yellow Medicine County treasurer. He had been a resident of St. Cloud for the past several months.
He was a member of Granite Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Granite Falls American Legion and Canby Last Man's Co.
He is survived by his wife; sons and daughters, James B., St. Cloud; Mrs. Gary (Maureen) McCausland, Tampa, Fla.; Mrs. Stephen (Mary) Muller, Golden Valley; Gregory, Minneapolis; 11 grandchildren; and sisters, Mrs. O.D. (Julia) Dobson, Minneapolis; and Mrs. Grace Gutekunst, San Bernadino, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one grandson.
