E. Viola "Vi" Friesen, 84, of Sioux City died Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at Casa de Paz Nursing Home.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with the Rev. Craig Collison officiating. Burial will be in McCook Cemetery, North Sioux City. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel.
Vi was born July 26, 1920, in Golconda, Ill., the daughter of Oscar and Lockie (Hall) Werner. She was raised on a farm near Golconda and graduated from Golconda High School.
She married Martin S. Friesen in June 1944, in Rock Valley, Iowa. The couple moved to Sioux City, where she had resided since. She had worked at Mosher's Greenhouse for more than 32 years and had been like a fixture there. She tended to all varieties of flowers in the greenhouse. She also maintained a huge flower garden and a separate vegetable garden at her home.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She loved gardening and canning. She also enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by a son, Richard "Dick" Friesen of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Margaret Ann "Marge" and Raymond Foster of Waubay, S.D.; two grandchildren, Brian Foster of Wichita, Kan., and Ruth and her husband, Jesse Hernandez of Webster, S.D.; a great-grandson, Jacob; and two sisters, Virginia and her husband, Allen McCreary of Zion, Ill., and Vernell Steinsdoerfer of Park City, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Ronald, Wilbert and Loren Werner; and a sister, Anna Geisert.
A memorial fund has been established in care of the family to be used for the distribution of Bibles in China.
