Phyllis R. Helsing, 94, of Onawa passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, at her residence.
Services will be p.m. Friday at Onawa United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Angela Gafford Asmus ofticiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Phyllis Rowenna was born March 3, 1915, in Newcastle, Neb., the daughter of James W. and Edna Pearl (Woolsey) Bagley. She was raised in the Newcastle area and graduated from Newcastle High School in 1932.
Phyllis and Ralph W. Helsing were united in marriage on Aug. 17, 1934, in Newcastle. The couple lived in various locations in Nebraska before moving from Omaha to Onawa in 1955. Ralph passed away Nov. 21, 1991, in Sioux City.
She was an active member of Onawa United Methodist Church, Onawa Women's Club and Farkle Club. She enjoyed bowling, golf, bird watching, gardening and reading. She enjoyed her family and family gatherings, which were always special times to her.
Survivors include a daughter, Darlene Barnett of Onawa; a son, James Helsing of San Miguel, Mexico; five grandchildren, Christy Maher of Allen, Neb., Lee Ann (Don) Warren of Decatur, Neb., Susan (Cal) Smith of Decatur, Rory (Lory) Barnett of Whiting, Iowa, and Shannon (Curtis) Richardson of Onawa; six great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Midge Pearson of Sacramento, Calif.; a close family friend, Bill Bauslaugh of Washington. D.C.; and nieces and nephews including Larry Pearson of Red Feather Lake, Colo.
In addition to her husband, Ralph, she was also preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Richard Wayne and Harold "Skip" Helsing; a great-grandson, Lucas Johnson; and four brothers.
