LaVern A. Helsing, 51, of LaBelle, died Nov. 2, 1992, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, from injuries received in an accident in the Ashton area several days earlier, when he was working with cattle and his horse fell and then rolled on him.
He was born Jan. 18, 1941, at Rigby, to Albert Homer and Martha Mary Haywood Helsing. He attended schools in Rigby and graduated from Rigby High School. He joined the National Guard in 1959 and went through six months training. He returned home and attended Idaho State University for a year before being called to active duty in 1961 with the 938th Engineering Co. during the Berlin Crisis.
On Dec. 28, 1961, he married Bonnie Blue Bazil at LaBelle. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He farmed and ranched in the LaBelle area. At the time of his death, he was serving as president of the Dilts Irrigation Co., having been president since 1967.
He was an active member of the LDS Church and served in the bishopric. He was active in Scouting for 15 years, served as Scoutmaster and Cubmaster, and had earned the Award of Merit for his Scout work.
Survivors include his wife of LaBelle; children, Mrs. Richard (Becky Blue) Chadwick of Lewiston, Utah, Brenda Helsing, Holly Helsing and Scott Helsing, all of LaBelle, and Lance Helsing of Roberts; his parents of Rigby; a brother and sister, Dwain Helsin of Rigby, and Lola Hardy of LaBelle.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the LaBelle LDS 2nd Ward with Bishop Brent Orr officiating. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at Eckersell Memorial Chapel in Rigby and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Rigby Pioneer Cemetery.
