The sudden and unexpected news of the death of John H. Hoelz at his home in this city last Thursday morning shortly before seven o'clock was a hard blow to the family and unthought of by those who knew him. Possessing a seemingly hardy physique and always the possessor of fairly good health, the news of his demise could hardly be believed. Wednesday, the day before his death, he was up and around and at dinner time seemed to be as well as usual. After eating he relieved his bartender, Albert Zechel, while the latter went to dinner. During his absence Mr. Hoelz was taken with a dizzy spell and called up Dr. L. N. Hicks by telephone, who came at once and gave him some medicine, after which Mr. Hoelz went to bed, apparently feeling somewhat better. An hour later when the doctor returned he found that Mr. Hoelz had sustained a hemorrhage of the brain and was in a critical condition. He lingered along in an unconscious condition until early the next morning when death came to his relief. The Drs. Newell were also called in consultation.
Mr. Hoelz was a native of New Munster, where he was born Dec. 20, 1856, and was 49 years old. June 12, 1883, he was married at that place to Miss Dorothy Elbert. They lived there until 1891, when they moved to Kansasville and lived there two years, Mr. Hoelz conducting a general store. In 1893 he sold out and came to this city, which has since been his home. A wife and ten children survive him. The latter are: John, who is a student at the state university; William, who recently enlisted in the United States navy and is stationed at Newport, Rhode Island; Alma, Dorothy, Simon, Leo, Joseph, Edward, Mary, and Margaret, all living at home. Mr. Hoelz's mother, Mrs. Josephine Lois, is still a resident of New Munster, and two sisters are also living—Mrs. H. J. Althoff of New Munster and Mrs. Matt Lenz of Wheatland.
The funeral services of Mr. Hoelz were held on Monday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Mary's Catholic church, Rev. T. Jacobs conducting the same. There was a large attendance of friends and relatives.
Among the relatives from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. John Elbert and daughter Mrs. Foster and Mr. and Mrs. Ben. Leib of Elgin, Ill.; H. and G. Bieneman of Kenosha; Miss Kruckman and Miss Smith of Rockefeller, Ill.; Joseph Elbert of Rock Valley, Ia.; Mrs. Matt Lenz, Mr. and Mrs. F. Althoff, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Althoff, Henry Althoff and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Kerkman of New Munster.
Mrs. Hoelz and family wish to thank the many friends who so kindly extended their aid and sympathy during their late bereavement.
