Elliott Bechtel, age 80 of Venice, Fla., formerly from Easton, Conn. and Little Rock, Ark. died on Sept. 27, 2011.
He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut class of 1952, a member of the Easton, Conn. Republican Town Committee and the Jesse Lee Methodist Church. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Arkansas Tennis Assn. and very active in tennis, running, snow skiing, flying airplanes, sailing and other yachting activities. He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, 307th Bomb Wing, during the Korean War. He was a retired Plant Manager for Remington Arms Co. He and his first mate Joan ran Island Yacht Charters in the Caribbean. He was a member of the Plantation Golf & Country Club in Venice where he was captain of two senior men's tennis teams, a member of their tennis committee, and was inducted into their Tennis Hall of Fame.
Survivors are his beloved wife, Joan; daughters, Robin Bechtel of Hollywood, Calif. and Amy Winter of Hampton Bay, N.Y.; granddaughter, Samantha Winter; sister, Gloria Gorby of Stonington, Conn.; Joan's daughters, Vicki Elkins of Heber Springs, Ark. and Kathy Lusk of Little Rock, Ark., and grandchildren, Jimmy, Mattie, & Kate Lusk.
A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Monday Oct. 3, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church, in Venice, Fla. with burial to follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Sarasota National Cemetery.
Ewing Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
