Bernard M. Richter, 66, a retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer and later a civilian electrician, died Thursday afternoon at his residence, 38 Washington Ave., after a short illness.
He was born in Missouri Valley, Ia. Oct. 21, 1910, son of Mrs. Clara Richter Mayhew of Hobart, Ind., who survives and the late Reuben Richter. He was educated in Gary, Ind. schools, entered the Navy in 1931, retiring 20 years later after serving in both World War II and the Korean conflict. He came to Portland in 1942 when he was stationed here with the Atlantic fleet. After his retirement he worked as an electrician with Portland Local 567, IBEW, for 20 years until two years ago.
Mr. Richter was a communicant of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a member of the Retired Officers Association, Paul Malia AL Post, IBEW and the AARP.
Surviving besides his mother are his wife, Anne (Connors) Richter of Portland; three daughters, Mrs. Todd (Joyce) Cartwright, North Windham, Mrs. Nancy Stultz, Gorham and Mrs. Timothy (Mary Margaret) Crellin, Santa Barbara, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Isabelle Ray, Hobart, Ind.; two brothers, Wilfred R., Hobart and Frank Mayhew of Valparaiso, Ind., and four grandchildren.
Prayers will be said at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the Conroy-Tully Funeral Home, 172 State St. with a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
