Russell A. Grams, 50, a math teacher at Coon Rapids Junior High School for 25 years, died Monday of brain cancer at his home in Dayton.
Grams grew up in the Anoka-St. Francis area and graduated from St. Francis High School, where he played basketball and football and was on the track team. He earned an education degree from St. Cloud State University in 1963 and a master's degree in math education there in 1965. He also studied at Columbia University in New York City and the University of Maryland.
He joined the Coon Rapids faculty in 1963 and taught math, geometry and algebra. He taught classes for gifted students and coached the wrestling and football teams.
He left teaching after he had cancer surgery in October 1988.
He is survived by his wife, Marsha; daughters Pamela Stoen, of Ada, Minn., and Lynette Thwing, Of Minneapolis; his parents, Walter and Beulah Grams, of Elk River, Minn.; brothers Gene, of Jacksonville, Fla.; Ronald, of Brooklyn Center, Dale, of Alexandria, Minn., and Jerry, of Zimmerman, Minn.; a sister, Patricia Larson, of St. Francis, and one granddaughter.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Anoka Covenant Church, 752 Grant St., Anoka. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home in Anoka. Memorials to the church's building fund or Health One Hospice Home Care are suggested.
