Mrs. Margaret A. Portman, 84, of Auburn, sister of Miss Millie Ellerbrock of Carroll, died Saturday afternoon at 224 West Ninth Street, Carroll. Mrs. Portman, widow of John Portman, succumbed to a long illness.
Requiem mass will be read at 9 a.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Jerome Koenig at St. Mary's Church in Auburn. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Monday at the Twit Funeral Chapel here, where the body is resting until the time of the final rites.
Mrs. Portman spent her life in the vicinity of Auburn. She was born Margaret A. Ellerbrock, daughter of Ferdinand and Anna Schwerr Ellerbrock, March 3, 1874, near Grant City.
She married John Portman of Yetter April 12, 1904, at St. Mary's Church in Auburn. Mr. and Mrs. Portman lived near Yetter until 1929 when they moved to Auburn. For 11 years they cared for Mrs. Portman's invalid mother, who had been previously cared for by Miss Millie Ellerbrock for several years.
Mrs. Portman was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, Charles Ellerbrock, and one sister, Sr. Mary Thaddea (Laura).
Surviving are one son, Frank Portman, Denver, Colo., who is here now; one daughter, Eileen, the wife of Lt. Col. William Collins, New Orleans, La., who is unable to attend the funeral rites because of illness; three sisters, Millie Ellerbrock, Carroll; Mrs. Herb (Christine) Herke, Fonda, and Sr. Mary Edith Josephine of the Good Shepherd Order, New Orleans, La.; two brothers, William J. Ellerbrock, Lake City, and F. W. Ellerbrock, Towa City; eight grandchildren, John, Anthony and Sylvia Portman and Dean, Marilyn, Nancy, Linda and Mark Collins; and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Portman was a member of St. Mary's Church at Auburn.
