Robert Parkhill Adams, age 96, of Carroll passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Hawkeye Care Center in Carroll.
Visitation will be from 5 – 7 P.M. on Friday evening at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at the Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Lake City American Legion. Casket bearers will be Bob’s grandchildren: Emily, Andrew, Abby, Erica, Zach, and Matthew. Born on April 29, 1921 in Omaha, NE, he was the son of Lloyd and Beatrice (Parkhill) Adams. Bob, as he was known to most, grew up in Lake City where he graduated from high school in 1939 and was class president. He attended the University of Iowa where he was a Cadet Lieutenant Colonel in the ROTC program and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He then attended one year of Law School at the U of I. In 1943, Bob enlisted in the United States Army and served three years in the U.S. and the Philippines in the Field Artillery. Bob was involved in the liberation of the Philippines. Following his military service, Bob returned to Lake City to operate his family’s business, Adams Elevator. He was married to Marjorie Ellerbrock on November 1, 1947 in Ft. Dodge. Bob operated the elevator in Lake City until 1967 when he purchased the Humphrey Grain Company in Carroll and operated it as Adams Grain Company until his retirement. Bob was past president of the Lake City Chamber of Commerce and the Lake City Country Club. He was also a member of the Lake City American Legion and a past member of Kiwanis. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church while living in Lake City. Bob was an avid traveler and visited many countries including: Peru, Siberia, Turkey, the Philippines (with Habitat for Humanity), Poland (with Global Volunteers), Costa Rica, Cuba, Russia, Switzerland, France, Mexico, Bali and most of the United States including Hawaii. Bob also had a sideline business as a photographer taking photos of many weddings, families, and events. Bob and Marjorie were avid antique collectors and had a shop called Marge’s Antiques.
Bob is survived by his children: Mark Adams of Carroll and Melissa Morris (Eugene) of Lohrville; six grandchildren: Emily Behrens (Sam) of Granger, Andrew Morris (Amanda) of Ames, Abby Behrens (Tony) of Altoona, Erica Adams (Mark Battista) of Urbandale, Zachary Adams of Des Moines, and Matthew Morris of Des Moines; five great grandchildren: Max, Macy, Owen, Hadley, and Mya; a sister Nancy Johnson of Madison, WI; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd and Beatrice Adams; his mother and father-in-law Leafy and Will Ellerbrock; his wife Marjorie in 1990; two sisters: Janet Bigelow and Katie Wenban; and a son Matthew in infancy.
Bob’s family is very grateful for the excellent care he received while living at Sunnybrook Assisted Living and for the past two years at Hawkeye Care Center.
