John E Evans, 66, chief executive of the Housing Investment Trust and a former bankruptcy trustee in Phoenix, died Jan. 14, 1986, in Washington, D.C., of complications from food poisoning.
Mr. Evans, of Washington, was a graduate of the University of Arizona and served as Navy fighter pilot during World War II. He was elected secretary-treasurer of the Arizona AFL-CIO in 196] and appointed special assistant for labor standards to the secretary of Housing and Urban Development in 1968. Between 1974 and 1982, he, served as a bankruptcy trustee for the U.S. District Court in Phoenix and as Housing and Urban Development area director and special assistant for HUD Indian programs from 1974 until 1982. In 1982, he moved to Washington when he was named chief executive officer of the Mortgage Investment Trust, which became the Housing Investment Trust in 1983.
Survivors include his wife. Arlouine; daughter, Ann; and son, John. Services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, 5045 E. Thomas Road, Scottsdale. Messinger Mortuary in Scottsdale made local arrangements.
