Lewis Manard Sims, 79, of West Melbourne, FL, passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 28, 2010. Lew was bom on June 27, 1930 in Cedar Falls, IA, son of the late Harlow and Maude (Collins) Sims. Lew enlisted in the U.S. Marines and served during the Korean War, receiving the Silver Star for his conspicuous gallantry, during a battle in which he received a Purple Heart, and a Gold Star from the South Korean Government.
Lew moved to Melboume, FL during the "space boom" of the early 60's, opened his business of 48 years, "Lewis Sims Concrete"—a labor he loved, took great pride in, and continued to work at until the day Jesus called him home to rest.
He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, dedicated volunteer for the Habitat of Humanity Organization, sponsored many charities as well as local Little Leagues, area high schools, and many the man that walked thru his life.
Lew also gave generously many lessons of life—honesty, hard work, and dedication to family and kindness to others.
Lew was known as "Grandpa Lew" by many.
Lewis was preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Marie; brother, Dallas (Gladys), and sister, Marlys. Survived by his daughter, Eileen Smith; son, Robert (Marybeth) Sims; brother, Donald (Margie); sisters, Margie (Sylvester) and Marilyn (Don) Mills, and his pride and joy "the grandsons", Steven (Andrea) Smith, Christopher Sims, Ray Sims, David Sims and Gregory Sims. His first great-grandson, Mason Lewis Sims arrives in June.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 4 p.m., by his family, at Lewis's residence. We welcome you to come and share your memories.
