T. J. Whalen, son of John Whalen and Celia Butler, was born on the old homestead five miles east of Rock Valley.
In 1901 he was united in marriage to Ellen McGuire. To this union eight, children were born, four sons and four daughters-Cecilia, Mrs. Percy Keegan, Larchwood; Genevieve, Mrs. Henry Klein, Mabel, Mrs. John Mundt, Sioux Falls; Elizabeth, Mrs. F. Keegan, Rock Valley; John, Cecil, Leonard, Sioux Falls; Arnold, Los Angeles, Calif.
In 1909 the family moved from Rock Valley to the farm two miles east of Larchwood, where they resided until they moved to town in 1923.
Mr. Whalen had been ailing in health the past six months. On July 18, his condition became serious and he was taken to the McKennan hospital, where he spent five weeks. On August 23, at his request, he was taken to his home where he was cared for.
On October 21, 1939, he passed away. His family, with the exception of one son, Arnold, who was unable to come on account of illness in his family, were at his bedside when the end came.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, at 9 at St. Mary's Catholic church. Rev. H. A. Janse officiating at a requiem high mass. Burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers were: J. J. Welsh, P. J. Sweeney, John Tyne, E. J. Schutloffel, W. M. Parks, Philip Burhenn. Active pallbearers were: Sylvester Tracy, George Powers, Leo McGuire, Clifford Reinke, Frank Tracy, Art Marotta.
Surviving his wife, four sons and four daughters, ten grandchildren, besides a host of other relatives and friends.
His father passed away in 1872, and his mother passed away at the family home in Larchwood, in 1916. Twin brothers, William and John, died in infancy, and his twin brother, the late James Whalen, died in 1926.

B. Hevern, Ray Keegan, Misses Mae and Elizabeth Keegan, Rock Valley; Gene Hogan and Henry Hotz, Hull; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Johnson, Woodland, Wash.; Mr, and Mrs. John Cauley, John L.
