Theadale "Ted" Paul Swenka, of Greeley, died Sunday, April 13, 2008 at Regional Medical Center in Manchester after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Edgewood. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Colesburg. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Muller Funeral Home, Edgewood, with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. and from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church on Saturday.
Theadale was born July 7, 1916, near North Liberty, Iowa, the son of John and Mary (Svoboda) Swenka. The family later farmed near Riverside, Iowa. Ted served in the Army-Air I Force during World War II from 1942 to 1945, including foreign service in the China-Burma-India Theatre. On Oct. 20, 1947, he married Irene M. Scholbrock at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wadena. They farmed near Randalia until moving to a farm near Greeley in 1957, where he lived until his death. Ted enjoyed farming and gardening, belonging to National Farmer's Organization and family gatherings and reunions.
Ted's family includes his wife, Irene of Greeley; son, Paul (Jane) Swenka of Greeley; daughters, Patricia (Illes Bognar) Swenka of Dundee, Ruth (Bob) Ham of Jacksonville, Fla., and Alice (John) Vontalge of Epworth; grandchildren, Robert (Elisia) Swenka of Sumner, Kathy (Jason) Smith of New Vienna, Mike Beswick of Tacoma, Wash., and Tanner and Jordan Vontalge of Epworth; three great-grandsons; sisters, Angeline Russell of Iowa City, and Laura (Dale) Piersall of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law, Jeanne Swenka of Iowa City, and Rita Manderfield of Fayette; brothers-in-law, Walter (Mary) Scholbrock of Rice Lake, Wis., and Herbert (Donna) Scholbrock of West Union.
Theadale was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Timothy Swenka at birth; sisters, Georgia, Nora, Caroline and Wilma; and brothers, Frank, Samuel, Arthur, Woodrow and John.
Following committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Mark's Parish Center.
