Research notes for Martha

The Missing Son, Dale (Madeline) Bedward...

Dale Bedward is mentioned as a son (deceased) in Martha's obit. He is mentioned as a son living - Dale (Madeline) Bedward, Michigan - in Edward's obit. The sons listed in Edward's obit are listed from oldest to youngest. Dale is first. My first thought was that Dale and William were twins. I don't believe this to be the case. All my searches for Dale in MI turned up the same man, Dale Bedward (1938-2009). This clearly is not him as Martha was 11 and Edward was 15 and not married at the time. However, the timeline for Dale's death (2009) fit the obits - alive when Edward passed in 2006 and deceased when Martha passed in 2011. This led me to investigate both Edward and Dale.

As it turns out, Dale is a nephew of Edward. Edward had a sister, Barbera. Edward and Barbara's parents were George and Cora (Dailey) Bedward. Cora died in 1926. George died in 1939. This 1940 census record shows Barbara and son, Dale, living with her grandparents, Edward and Harriet Bedward. Barbera married Lawrence Jones (1914-2000) in July, 1940 and she died Sept 23, 1947. They had 4 children together plus Dale. When Barbera died, my GUESS is that these children were sent to live with other family. Dale went to live with Edward and Martha. Whether through official adoption or just claiming him as their son, I believe the Dale listed in both obits is actually a nephew of Edward...

Dale Monroe Bedward (27 Dec 1938 - 18 Apr 2009)

The release of the 1950 census records should prove interesting in all of this.
